What is a Community Council?

Community Councils were created by the Local Government (Scotland) Act, 1973. The Act required local authorities to introduce Community Council schemes for their area. Local authorities and other bodies consult with Community Councils on issues that are important to each community and local authorities are required to consult with Community Councils on planning applications.

Community Councils are made up of people who care about their local community and want to make their area a better place to live. They have an important role in local democracy because they represent local people’s views about local services to the local authorities and other agencies.

What does Kildrum Community Council do?

Kildrum Community Council’s ambition is to make Kildrum the best place to live!

As residents, we work together to improve the area we live in. We listen to what the residents of Kildrum say, hear their ideas or concerns, and consider what could be done to address them. Sometimes this can include meeting with or writing to local Councillors, running campaigns or projects in the area, or sharing important information with residents.

We meet on the last Wednesday of each month in the ‘Y Rooms’ opposite the Afton Road shop at 7pm. Community Police Officers and at least one local Councillor are usually in attendance, and any Kildrum resident is welcome to attend.

Some of our current projects include:

  • Parking issues

  • Installing a community defibrillator

  • Establishing a gardening club

  • Memorial tree planting

  • Landscaping of derelict land

  • Litter and cleansing

Through our website and Facebook page, we provide important updates to local residents on issues impacting them.
